Self-care has become a rather popular term these days. Everyone is talking about it as if it was a revolutionary idea, and there have been very different perceptions of it. Although self-care is a fairly new concept it isn’t part of a revolution of mind or an unachievable innovative goal. Self-care is what it is because finally society has recognised that if you don’t take care of yourself no one will. Depression and anxiety cases are rising like crazy. Stress is sneakily crawling into day to day activities. It is up to you to prevent yourself from going down that path.

With busy schedules and stressful lives, it is difficult to have time to even consider how you’re feeling and if you need a break. By the time you realise something’s wrong it might be too late. Choose now as the best time to act on it and take care of yourself.

Self-care has a few dimensions to it, apart from lighting candles and taking bubble baths, as you’ll see below.

1º Dimension: Physical Self-Care

This is about how your body feels and how you can improve it. Are you feeling tired lately? Then you need to address that right away and not let it escalate to fatigue. Here are some things you could do:

  1. Go for a walk or run

  2. Take a yoga class

  1. Go to the gym for a strength training session

  2. Drink more water and keep track of it

  1. Take a nap

  2. Cook yourself a healthy meal

2º Dimension: Mental / Intellectual Self-Care

Mental / Intellectual self-care is about how you’ve been able to deal with mental challenges in your daily basis. how focused you’ve been lately, and about stimulating your brain to always keep learning.

  1. Read a book

  2. Watch a good movie/documentary

  1. Keep a journal

  1. Learn a new skill

  2. Turn off your phone for a few hours

  3. Have a declutter session

3º Dimension: Emotional Self-Care

You need to take care of how you are feeling. Your emotions play a big role in your decision-making and your state of mind. Here are some things you could do to help:

  1. Go see a therapist

  2. Have a chat with yourself and figure out where those emotions are coming from

  1. Have a good cry

  2. Forgive yourself, or someone

  3. Take a bath and relax

  1. Learn to say no, and set some boundaries

4º Dimension: Spiritual Self-Care

Spiritual Self-care doesn’t only have to mean religion. This is about how you go through life and what you believe in. In order to stay in tune with the world around you, try one of these things:

  1. Meditate and reflect

  1. Practise gratitude, have a gratitude book / journal

  2. Pray

5º Dimension: Social Self-Care

As human beings we thrive off connection and communication. Taking care of our social needs can be overlooked by many but it still is an extremely important factor in our lives.

  1. Go out to dinner with friends

  1. Have a sleepover with your best friend

  2. Call someone who’s far away and who you miss

  3. Plan a vacation or staycation with a loved one

Ultimately, self-care is about making sure you get everything you need to become the best version of yourself that you can be. And that way you give more to others when it comes to love and friendship without draining yourself of burning out.

Don’t overlook the power of becoming a more well-rounded and confident person when it comes to literally living your life. It will be the game-changer you’ve been looking for!
